Outright release is just that, you just want the guy off your team ASAP you don't want to wait the 48 hours for him to pass through waivers. You will be responsible for 50 percent of the contract for the life of the contract but least this dude is off your team!
Designated for Assignment
Once a year the DFA fairy comes and visits your team and allows you to drop one player while only having to pay 25 percent of the contract. We call this the player who was Designated for Assignment. Choose your player wisely. You have until the trade deadline to pick which player you want to DFA after that you have to wait until the season is over and at that time your DFA counts towards next seasons DFA.

Some quick clarification. Let's say I gave Billy Bob a 5 year, $50M AAV contract ($250M total value), and I just realized how worthless he is, and he isn't worth anything on my roster. And it's still the first year of his contract I decide to outright release him. Am I on the hook for all $125M this year? Or is that spread over the life of the contract, e.g. $25M/yr for 5 years?
Does it work the same way for a DFA'ed player?

How about this - I drafted a player worth 10 million plus an arbitration year. I DFA this season. So I am responsible for 2.5 million and that's it? Or the 2.5 mil and 25 percent of the arbitration agreement?

Just the $2.5 this year. You can always non-tender a contract to or RFA an ARB eligible player.

Yea that's why dfa is so good it's that 25 percent which really helps with a stupidly bad contract

If I don't use my DFA option, can I trade it to someone else?

If I don't use my DFA option, can I trade it to someone else? It is not clearly expressed in the rules, so no. If you want, we can revisit this in the offseason.
